Many were shocked when Russia invaded Georgia in early August. Perhaps the particulars of where and when were unknown, but the basics were quite predictable. Moscow was taking a hammering from the West and had to act: missile defense deals were concluded with the Czech Republic and Poland, historically a key buffer for Russia.
